A ninja's 8th birthday!

Hey there!

April 2nd was my son's 8th birthday and with him taking kung-fu classes, he wanted to have a ninja themed birthday. I didn't have as much time as I would've wanted to prepare his big party this year, but I thought: "hey! Having fun with friends and family is what birthday parties should be about, right?"....
Yea, of course it was just an excuse for me not to feel like a bad mother!

Here are pics of the party:

Candy sushis! YUMM!

On the first platter: rice krispies rolls with gummy worms and licorice inside, white royal icing with red balls sprinkles-thingies on top and chocolate pocky sticks! My favorites are the strawberry ones, but they are pink, so yeah.... not very boy-ish...
Second platter: Rice krispies "nigiri" with gummy sharks, licorice and cinnamon balls.
I wanted them to look more candy-ish than real life, which, imo, wouldn't have been as appetizing for the kids.

Then, how could we have a ninja party without ninjago? But, since I ain't a big fan of commercial characters, they only made a small appearance in the event, and my son was very happy with it!

Banner I made:

This one was very easy to make! I bought a red plastic tablecloth that I cut in half at the dollar store (1$), printed my son's name and the yin yang symbol on plain white paper (actually, that's half the paper for each letter.. 5.5" x 8.5"). I used black ribbon I had at home, used double-sided tape to tape ribbon to tablecloth then letters to ribbon! For the hanging thing, I used a small pvc pipe remnant I had. Folded the top of the tablecloth, taped it in place, inserted the pipe inside, threaded black twine (on hand, again), trough the pipe and made a double knot on top! He loved that too, it's now hanging in his bedroom!

Of course, for me a kid's b-day party isn't complete without the party favors! I found a tutorial to make a cute plushie a while back, pinned it so I wouldn't lose it! And here it is: Plushie tutorial. I used it as the base for the ninjas (felt), and made my own eyes! The hair for the pink one (which was supposed to be for a little girl that couldn't come) is simple acrylic yarn. I made 2 blues, 2 greens, 2 oranges, 1 black (I know! Just one black ninja! But the stores all seemed to be out of black and felt!) 1 pink. Love them!!!!

Here is a shot of all the kids together. Little b-day boy is the one on the bottom left! (sorry about the silly face and the blurry pic, first: I have to get a new camera, my old one broke and this is a crappy phone cam! and second: They were all on a sugar high, that was the very BEST I could do!)

And here is my big boy, at the end of the day, he really doesn't look like it on there (he's tryin' a look cool, yo!) but he had a blast and told me he was proud of me for organizing such a fun party for his b-day! Yup, he said that... And yup, mama got teary eyes when he said it XD

Now I know what you're thinking, WHAT! NO CAKE? hum... yes, there was one... no, I ain't got no pic... no, I wasn't going to take one and just forgot! ... The cake was a lie... oops, sorry, old habits ( hehe) the cake was a wreck! Poor kid, only had red-pinkish icing on it.... But, it still was good, tho!

Now, my big boy is 8 and I can't help but feel nostalgic.. Where did these last years go?
Don't they grow up WAY to fast???

What do you think?
Also, please, let me know if my english is *at least* understandable.. I am french-canadian, so having a bit of trouble with the english here!

Thanks and until next time guys! XOX

The after Christmas

Well, here we are!
I have to say that I am a little sad that Christmas went by so fast. We only had 2 parties. One at my place and one at my in-laws that both ended really early. Of course, the new year is just around the corner, but I have absolutely no plans!

So, 2010 being very close... I have so many resolutions I must make, I don't know where to start! Actually, I don't like that word: resolution... Nobody respects these engagements, I prefer to say: changes that need to be made!

1: Lose weight
I won't be losing any weight for others, that's for sure. But I gained 35 lbs in 6 months and I really don't like myself right now. I've always been quite small and now, to have all that extra weight, is very hard on my self esteem.

2: Finding and keeping a job that I like.
First: finding, of course. The problem is, I am so scared of going forward because I'm afraid to fall! I am shutting doors in my own face, because I'm afraid of taking some risks... so, in 2010, I'll just go for it!

3: Positivity.
I want to stop being so negative and need to start being positive. I must stop telling me that I wont be able to do this or that... It's kind of like # 2...

4: Pay all my debts!
Of course, they are as much Martin's as they are mine. So, TEAM WORK!

5: Move into a house.
Ok, for starters, it will be rented, because I won't be able to afford a house in 2010, but that's a start!

I'm leaving you with a picture that I just love! Found it on the web. My future kitchen! Oh yeah!!! ^_^

kisses x

A lot to say!

Today I've got a lot to say. Since I did sooo many things in the last fiew months, I've got sooo many things to show you, let's go!

First, fondant! I've always admired those cakes, so I thought I'd give fondant a shot! Here's my 1up mushroom from Mario Bros.

After I realized that it was as malleable and fun as play dough, I HAD to taste it...>_<

Mwahahahahahaha!

Second, my friend asked me to make her daughter's 4th birthday cake. I rented a book at the library and let the girl chose (sorry can't remember the name of the book)

Here it is:

All the accessories are fondant. The cake is chocolate. The powders in the small containers in front are powdered sugar with food coloring. The mother AND the daughter loved the result. After that cake, I realized that that much fondant was not THAT good...

And here's my son's 5th birthday cake! He wasn't sure if he would go with a Mario Bros. or Zelda theme. After a looooong heart breaking decision, he went with Zelda for this year! Next year, Mario Bros. ^_^

Fondant covered vanilla cake. He absolutely wanted Tetra to be there as a statue. That's the grey thing between the rock and the bridge.
Link and Zelda:

Bakerella is a Goddess, everyone knows it! I tried her "burger cupcakes".

Cookie fries:

Cupcake breads:

Burger with frites:

I know, that ketchup and mayo are a strange color, that's all I had at the time >_<. When I was done with the fries, I had some cookie dough left, I decided to make little people out of it. My son wanted to taste the cookie dough, but I had use it all... So we had to amputate!
... aaaaand here's the result to that:

He's waaaay to sensitive... -_-

But as soon as he got his burger...

Ah! kids... They can forget so easily... ^_^

Bento love! ^_^

Here you can see: rice, nori, cherry tomatoes, eggs (the small chicks are eggs... sorry can't find the link to the website that showed how to make them), carrots, cucumbers, cheese, saucages and meat wraps. De last picture is the one I made (smaller) for my son. I didn't make them for lunch... I made them just for fun... I know... -_-

And the dessert that night... Kiwis and strawberries with apple sauce sprinkled with cinnamon and vanilla sugar... and, of course, chocolate pockies! ^_~

Cupcakes!!! Yeah!!! I made cupcakes today and my son offered to help.. yeah, of course... He had just started when he already gave up! I told him that he had to, at least, finish the one he had started and he could go play right after. So I made them all by myself, just like the big girl that I am! -_-
Vanilla cupcakes and frosting with fondant.

First theme; Mario bros. (Of course!)

I kinda like the flower... Bowser looks like a cross between him and Krusty the clown x_x. The 1 up mushroom is the one that my 5 year old had to finish!

Second theme; superheros!

I love the superman one!!! I am so proud of myself! It's just a shame that there is all this black on the red! -_- Spiderman was the easiest... not very nice, but once digested, no one would notice the difference! And batman... HAHAHAHA!!!!

Cute faces:

CUTE!!!

And finally; animals!

Yup, that's hello kitty... At least it's supposed to be... ^_^ And I loooove that panda!
I'm leaving you today with a picture I took from one of my son's best friend!
see ya x
